It’s not Friday the 13th. I don’t think there’s a full moon, but baseball fans could tell you that something was definitely going on tonight.
The biggest story came out of Detroit, where a big ole mess was made. The details of the debacle will be everywhere tomorrow. I would just like to reiterate that a perfect game was in the balance. Two outs in the ninth and the runner was out. The runner didn’t even want to be safe! The umpire has to know the situation, and I’m very surprised that anything close would be called safe. That being said I feel bad for all involved. I think a small token would be for the official scorer to rule the hit as E3, and give Galarraga a no hitter at least.
Umpire madness was rampant in Toronto too. They took a run away from the Rays. The Rays runs haven’t been coming easy lately and the umpires took one away. I looked like a kid after someone took her blanket. They are lucky that the Rays fired off some runs, because believe me if the Rays had lost the game by one run…
Lost in the shuffle of all this officiating controversy is the fact that Ken Griffey Jr. retired. He is one of the greats. I look forward to watching the clips of his gorgeous swing and infectious smile. People wonder why everyone loved him, but he seemed to have such a joy for the game and that was great to watch. If you want to appreciate him read this.
Thank goodness the Rays have an off day tomorrow. They could definitely use it, and I think the fans could use it too. Go Rays!
