Game 145 - Rays vs. Yankees

By Jessica | September 13, 2008

longo

Oh how my heart has LONGed for thee!

Sometimes you don’t realize how much you miss something until you get it back.  That’s not to say that Willy Aybar hasn’t filled in admirably because he has.  It’s just that Longo is the man you know.  He didn’t have many problems with runners in scoring position and he made some great plays in the field.  Basically he’s still even keeled, and it was like he never left.  I don’t envy Maddon the problem of how to keep Aybar busy.

Kudos to James Shields too.  Why?  He only shut down the New York Yankees.  Too bad Trevor Miller couldn’t follow suit, but he only gave up one run.  So one down, one to go tonight.  Maybe Garza will try to one up Shields with a complete game shutout.  Go Rays!!

Maddon is very good at getting all his players at bats and playing time. My guess is that Aybar will get plenty of work spelling Iwamura, Pena and Floyd against tough lefties and occasionally giving Longoria time off against tough righties. I think part of the reason he and Gross have played well when they were needed to fill in is that both had been given playing time earlier in the year.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we continue to see what we did today with Aybar and others being brought in mid-game to keep fresh. He didn’t start but still got 2 ABs.
