Game 97 - Blue Jays vs. Rays

By Jessica | July 20, 2008

Lazy Bones

Occasionally you have a player who is quite nonchalant in their approach to playing baseball.  They’ve made it to the big leagues because they are very gifted athletes.  Their coaches just say that’s their style of play.  However they frustrate the hell out of you because you know if they just shifted into high gear they could be unstoppable.

BJ Upton is one of these players.  Don’t get me wrong, I love BJ.  He is a treat to watch, one of my favorite Rays.  He has speed, a gun for an arm and a ton of ability.  I guess I’d just like to see some oompf, ya know.  Like today when he grounded out to the pitcher.  Sure that sucks, and chances are that’s an out, but why not run hard to first just in case?  If you run hard every time, one of those times it will pay off.  C’mon show us what you’ve got Beej.

Also he’s having trouble at the plate.  RJ over at DRaysBay had a great point today.  BJ hurts the team when he gets himself into good hitters counts.  Sometimes I think he’s looking for the walk.  Don’t coaches say with two strikes swing at anything close?  BJ has looked at a lot of third strikes lately.  He’s so good, he should just go with the see the ball hit the ball approach.  Not that I know what I’m talking about, but it sounds good.

I guess this is a touchy thing for coaches.  They don’t want to piss off their superstars, but I wonder if they’ve ever considered saying “Your ass better be hustling out there or its going to be on the bench tomorrow!”  The pep talk is probably a better approach, but he doesn’t seem to be very pumped up lately.

It’s alright.  Many teams have lazy bones.  I can think of two in New York.  One of them plays second base and rhymes with Dano.  The other plays for the Mets.

BJ we love you.  You have all the tools.  Fire up man, you can be the best center-fielder in baseball if you give it your all.  I for one can’t wait to see it.  Seriously, don’t make me wait to see it.

Go Rays!!

Oh yeah, today’s game was buckets of yuck.  Toronto 9 - Tampa 4.
