Game 76 - Rays vs. Marlins
By Jessica | June 24, 2008
Uh, Hello?
Is the bullpen phone only one way? Is it possible for someone from the bullpen to call the dugout? You know, to maybe inquire if the manager is actually there or to check if the phone is working.
I got home late tonight and thought I probably missed the whole game, but it was top of the ninth. I got to see Longo add some insurance runs. Love him. Little did I know how important these runs would be!
They called on Percy for the save. He started off great. Strikeouts are encouraged here. Then something went awry. He walked three straight batters. Three. This is where I would be checking to see if that phone is working. I know he had a three run lead but he’s really off. Maddon has scary faith in him though.
Next batter hit a hard ground ball, and Longo made an ass saving diving stop and got the guy at second. Run scored. Rays 6 - Marlins 4.
Okay two outs. Percy walks another to load the bases. This is where I’d be calling Maddon’s cell phone to ask him how much wine he drank today. I mean isn’t there some sort of rule about if you walk four batters your done???? Scary faith.
In the end Maddon’s faith was justified. Percy got a ground out to end the game. Rays win 6-4. So why do I feel like the Rays dodged a bullet?
Let’s hope they can do it again tomorrow. Win that is, not scare the hell out of me. Go Rays!!
Ps. What is up with the new trend of beards on this team? Me no likey. Navi’s has an Amish vibe going. Did they lose a bet?

Somewhere I read that it is a show of solidarity with Baldelli who is sporting one in Vero Beach. I have no idea if that is true.

Yeah, I read the solidarity with Rocco thing, too.
And hard as a decision it is to make, I think Maddon was justified in leaving Percy in. There has to be some faith and trust there with your closer and not just yank them out like that. It’s not like he gave up runs. Though it could have turned out much, much differently if Longoria hadn’t saved his ass.
I do wonder what was up though. He’s walked 6 at-bats all season then walks 4 last night. Hope we don’t see him on the DL again.

Do either of you guys remember where you read about the beard solidarity?
Thanks.

I think I read it here. http://www.forums.mlb.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=messages&webtag=ml-rays&tid=20797
The source of the thread appears to be the ION broadcast on the 18th. I think thats the night we were stuck with WGN.

Let’s not forget to vote for the Rays on the All Stars Roster. Perhaps consider posting a link to the ballot; one can vote up to 25 times. I would love it if the Rays bumped out some RedSox, who are currently dominating the voting.
Percy is starting to turn into the ‘girl with a curl’ When he is good, he is very good…but when he is bad, he is horrible! Love him anyways tho-
Go Rays!

Yeah, okay, so I actually am a moron…I missed the link to All Stars voting. Just delete me now. I am off to put my head under a pillow for a while.

Karen don’t be so hard on yourself. It’s not like the link is red or has flashing lights or anything! I’m just glad someone else is voting for the Rays!
